Bushfire Recovery in Northern Victoria

19th February 2014

Assistance for recovery after the Mickleham-Kilmore fire and the Numurkah fire.

Many Rotarians will be asking how can they assist people affected by the recent Mickleham-Kilmore fire and the Numurkah fire.

For both fires, Rotary Clubs are asked to work through the respective Assistant Governors: Lee Strahan for Group 3 (Calder Hume) and Bernie Bott for Group 7 (Moira Northern).

Lee (Rotary Club of Sunbury) can be contacted on 0414 751 959 or leestonecraft@hotmail.com and Bernie (Rotary Club of Yarrawonga Mulwala) can be contacted on 0409 573 148 or alawlum@westnet.com.au.
Both will be working with the clubs in their areas to coordinate requests for Rotary assistance as well as its provision.

Clubs wishing to provide materials, cash or labour should contact Lee and Bernie to see where that can be used. At present Bernie is seeking fencing materials [2.5mm Flexabel standard galvanised plain wire, 165cm black stock posts (star pickets) and 200mm treated pine strainer posts] or cash to purchase it.

Rice straw is being sought for erosion control in the Mickleham-Kilmore fire area. If it can be obtained then funds will be required to transport it and volunteers will be needed to assist property owners with its installation for erosion control. If you might be able to assist please let Lee know.

BlazeAid will be rebuilding farm fencing from their Wandong base camp as from 24 February. It is now seeking expressions of interest from volunteers to join working groups and for other backup support. For more details go to www.blazeaid.com. You can email them directly through blazeaid@gmail.com.

Please keep your own Assistant Governor up to date on any assistance you can provide; they will be helping to coordinate the District response to the fire recovery.
