Road Trauma Driver Education

This program is aimed at year 10 students and provides them with twenty five hours of classroom work using 4 videos sponsored by Shell and Rotary culminating in six twenty five minute in car sessions of driver training. The program assists the students in becoming confident learner drivers using the “L” plates and looks closely at values associated with driving. The cost per student in the Alpine Shire is $60.00 which covers the cost of in car instruction. The special driver training car was supplied by Nissan in conjunction with the local Rotary clubs of the shire. The car visits five state and private secondary schools within the Alpine and Indigo Shires each year. The teacher conducting the classroom instruction needs to attend DECCA at Shepparton to receive a Diploma to qualify them to teach driver education. The cost of this is easily raised from local businesses.
The program is self funded with classroom time paid from the individual school’s global budget and the car replacement cost of $8000.00 is accrued at the end of 4 years of operation. The students who have participated in the program to date have expressed their appreciation and satisfaction with the project.
