| Past District Governors |
| DISTRICTS 65, 28, 280, 279, 979 and 9790 Rotary was introduced into Australia on 11th April 1922 when it was operated by Commissioners. Professor W.A. Osborne was appointed Commissioner for Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia. The first District Governor, Fred Birks of the Rotary Club of Sydney, was inducted on the 15th September, 1927 and held office until June 1929 when the whole of Australia was proclaimed a separate District, No. 65. In 1949 District 65 became District 28 being Tasmania, part of Victoria east of longitude 144 Degrees and part of New South Wales. In 1957 Districts were renumbered and District 28 became District 280. On July 1, 1972 District 280 was divided into two, and the Clubs in our area became the new District 279. In 1977 the District was re-numbered District 979 and since then we have again been re-numbered to District 9790. This is the number we know today.
