The Rotary Club of Albury is the oldest in the District being admitted to Rotary International on 2nd November, 1927. In 1927 the District system was first introduced and Albury was in District 65, the territory being the whole of Australia. Other Clubs of our present District followed; Corowa (July) 1939 and Benalla (November) 1939, Wangaratta 1940, Euroa and Yarrawonga-Mulwala 1946, and Shepparton 1948. In 1949 District 65 became District 28 being Tasmania, part of Victoria east of longitude 144 Degrees and part of New South Wales. Deniliquin came in 1950, Wodonga 1953, Myrtleford, Cobram and Seymour 1954 and Heidelberg and Coburg 1956. In 1957 Districts were renumbered and District 28 became District 280, then came Numurkah 1957, Bright and Finley 1959, Kyabram and Preston 1960, Tatura and Broadmeadows 1962, Albury North and Nathalia 1963, Tallangatta and Mooroopna 1964, followed by Alexandra and Thomastown in 1966, Mansfield and Corryong 1967, Greenborough 1968, Reservoir 1969, Albury West 1970 and Appin Park 1972. On July 1, 1972 District 280 was divided into two, and the above Clubs became the new District 279. Since then the following Clubs have been admitted to Rotary International: Kilmore/Broadford (1972); Sunbury, Eltham, Beechworth and Heidelberg North (1973); Shepparton South and Belvoir-Wodonga (1974); Fawkner (1975); Pascoe Vale (1976); Strathmore-Gladstone Park, Albury Hume and Healesville (1977); Shepparton Central (1983); Wodonga West (1984); Tocumwal, Lavington, Craigieburn, Holbrook and Mount Beauty (1985); Jerilderie, Yea and BellbridgeLake Hume (1986); Rutherglen, Bundoora and Nagambie (1987). In 1977 the District was re-numbered District 979 and since then we
have again been re-numbered to District 9790. Clubs are still being established in our District and East Shepparton was chartered in 1990, Diamond Creek in 1992, Ivanhoe and Riddells Creek in 1993, Moreland in 1996, Romsey Lancefield in 1997 Whittlesea in 1998 and Milawa Oxley in 2009. District membership now numbers 1715. ROTARY DISTRICT 9790 AREA DESCRIPTION Australia - New South Wales, that Portion east of longitude 144°30', south of Billabong Creek from longitude 144°30' to the Shire of Jerilderie, south of the northern boundaries of the Shire of Jerilderie, Urana, Culcairn, (excluding an area within five mile radius of Henty Post Office) and Holbrook, and that portion with a twenty mile radius of Corryong, Victoria Post Office, but excluding that portion within twelve mile radius of Echuca Post Office; and VICTORIA east of the southeast arc of twelve mile radius circle from the Echuca Post Office, of the western boundaries of the Shire of Deakin, Rodney, Goulburn, Seymour, Pyalong, Romsey and Bulla and north of the southern boundaries of the Cities and Shires of Broadmeadows, Coburg, Preston, Heidelberg, Eltham, Yea, Alexandra, Mansfield, Oxley, Bright, Tallangatta and Upper Murray. |

DISTRICTS 65, 28, 280, 279, 979 and 9790 Rotary was introduced into Australia on11th April 1922 when it was operated by Commissioners. Professor W.A. Osborne was appointed Commissioner for Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia. The first District Governor Fred Birks of the Sydney Club was inducted on the 15th September, 1927 and held office until June 1929 when Australia was proclaimed a separate District No. 65.
