History

The Rotary Club of Yea was admitted to Rotary International in May of 1986. With an initial membership of 23, the Charter was presented in Yea Shire Hall on July 5 1986. Under the guidance of Reg Scott of Molesworth, the District Governor's special representative, the Rotary Club of Alexandra sponsored Yea club.

A leading role in this sponsorship was played by three Rotarians; Reg Scott, Roy Fox and Bill Hewitt. Of the original group, two are still members; Gary Fitzgerald and Les Hall. Our sponsor Roy Fox is still a regular guest. Alexandra members, John Sinclair and Doug Zerbe, were inducted into Yea in that year and also remain members. In 2003/4 we have 37 members, ten of whom are women.

The Yea club has always promoted the established programmes of Rotary International and of our district. We have had a continuing involvement in RYLA and, over the years, have sponsored Youth Exchanges and such activities as the National Youth Science Forum. Yea has fielded teams in the Rotary Debating Competition and has supported such endeavours as the Moira Kelly Children First Rotary Farm in Kilmore and the Bone Marrow Foundation and Cancer Council Victoria. It is a matter of pride to be associated with the world-wide programmes like the eradication of polio.

Local activities are dear to the heart of Yea Rotary and, over the years, we have taken an active role in more projects than could be mentioned in detail. Local sports clubs, schools, and service groups have all received grants from time to time. We have supported the renovation of the Yea Railway Station, the local Tourism Association, the Rosebank Hostel and the Agricultural Show. Two outstanding projects were the Livestock Industry Appeal, which raised funds for the Community Centre at the High School and the raising of $10,000 for the Emergency Section at Yea Hospital. Recent 'hands on' projects have seen Rotarians levelling and sowing parkland areas at the entrances to Yea and preparing the approaches to the Yea Wetlands swing bridge, planting trees and clearing trees and erecting fences. This 'contribution in kind' is the recognised profile of Rotary in the Yea community.

A key part of Rotary work is raising the funds to support these many and varied activities. Over the years, Yea has run all manner of fundraisers, from Calcutta nights to 'Music Hall', from Trivia nights and raffles to Auction sales and stalls. Our 'Flagship' activity has been and continues to be the Rotary Art Show. This project was taken on by the Rotary Club when, after 15 years, the Chamber of Commerce could no longer continue. Since 1986, it has gone from strength to strength, sponsored by the Shire of Murrindindi and now attracts artists and buyers from across the state. More than a money raiser, this has become a part of local life and is always associated with the Australia Day BBQ, also run by Rotary, with the Lions Club, as part of the traditional celebrations.

In compiling this brief report, it is timely to recognise the fantastic tradition of Service in the Rotary Club of Yea. Whatever the job, 'You only need to ask' has become the measure. It is also appropriate to acknowledge the work done by Charter Member David Evans in preserving the lively memory of activities, since its induction, of The Rotary Club of Yea. His work forms the basis of this history.

Birth of Rotary in Yea

On the 19th of February 1986 a list of names was drawn up of possibly interested men who maybe interested in forming a Rotary Club in Yea.

Reg Scott of Molesworth who was the District Governors special representative at that time held a meeting at his home at Molesworth. This followed by a meeting at St. Lukes Hall in Yea where the numbers had increased.

Our first dinner meeting was held at Beaufort Manor and it was agreed we form a provisional Rotary Club of Yea and hold weekly meetings with 23 interested members.

Yea Rotary Club was admitted to Rotary on May 1st 1986 and the Charter presentation on July 5th 1986 was in the Shire Hall.

The Rotary Club of Yea was sponsored by The Rotary Club of Alexandra and the most active in the forming were Reg Scott, Roy Fox and Bill Hewitt.

Reg has since passed on and Roy is still a visitor to our Club, a Rotarian who has the ultimate respect from all our members.

CHARTER NIGHT

Rotary Brings Hope

Charter Night July 5 th. 1986

Charter President : Daryl Callander

Secretary: Ric Long

Community Service: David Evans

Youth Service: Graeme Broadbent

Treasurer : Tim Dale

Our first project was to host a bus load of disadvantaged children from Heidleberg.

We had a barbecue soft drink and icecream down on the river at John Tainton's. Ian Bell spent all day baiting hooks for the kids. One fish was landed for the day. A great day.

Our next effort was spreading wood chips around the gardens at the Yea Nursing Home, followed by a working bee cutting and delivery of wood to Legacy Widows.

We were fortunate to secure The Art Show from the Chamber of Commerce at short notice - more on that later.

We all got involved in a Livestock Industry Appeal to raise funds for the Community Centre at the High School.

An evening folding sealing and sending out letters. This was a brain child of Don Lawson which was a great success.

Bernie Quinlan - Director International Service, arranged for Gina Callander to go to India exchange student Bobbie to arrive from India shortly.

Vocational Service Graeme Clements arranged mock job interviews at the High School

A joint service clubs bowls night raised $1,000 for the community centre.

Youth Service - Graeme Broadbent, was also involved in the mock interviews and arranged Youth Achievement awards for four students we also sponsored two youth to a Rotary Youth Leadership Seminar.

Graeme also took out a contract to wash the police car and gave the money to Rotary, John Sinclair and Doug Zerbe both members of the Rotary Club of Alexander were inducted into our club on our change over night.

This was a good year for consolidating The Club.

The Rotary Club of Yea Art Show

The Yea Chamber of Commerce held their first outdoor Art Show in 1971 and functioned well until 1986 when several meetings failed to get a quorum. Ray Watson (Beaufort Manor) was in the Chamber of Commerce as well as a Rotarian he suggested we take the Art Show on board as we were looking for a project this being our first year.

All relevant papers and artist's names were dropped at our community Service Directors home on a Friday night the last week in November, the Art Show being on 26th, 27th 28th of December.

After a busy 2 or 3 hours sorting all the gear out I arrived at The Yea Chronicle office to talk to Ash Long whose help I needed. We agreed even at this late hour it was a must that we run it from a continuity point of view or we may loose it.

A new letter was written to inform the artists that it was still on, the entry fees etc. and it was all posted by 12 o'clock. Great credit to Ash Long.

I am not sure of the number of artists we contacted but we considered ourselves lucky as the entries kept coming in. Our approach was to run the show as best we could learn from it and at least we had laid our claim to that day.

The Art Show stands were stored at the Butter Factory and I asked at a meeting could 3 or 4 chaps give me a hand on Saturday morning to sort it out - about 20 members arrived to help. That I will never forget.

When the show opened we noticed everyone was asking where the painting was for the raffle that's how much we were with it. We Purchased a nice painting by Lola Anderson very reasonably priced and away we went.

Each Night we had to take down the paintings and store them at Graeme and Marion Bruer's shed and put them out again each day. We used Brendan Dignam's Trailer and had a large coil of plastic bubble insulation - 1 layer of paintings one layer of insulation and so on. Our First year exceeded my expectation when we had a profit of $1,809.

I realised after the Art Show that the support was greater than I had experienced before.

The second year we went indoors in the Shire Hall, which was a learn again experience.

As each year goes another Director runs The Art Show and each one had 100% support that is probably why in a good year we hover around the $10,000 mark.

Into our 14th year:
Art Show - 14 years Continuity
DECA -14 years Continuity
Yea High School Interviews - 14 years Continuity

Once again we hosted the disadvantaged children from Heidelberg on the river at John Taintons. No fish - The River was higher and nobody brought any worms, but Les Hall had his Shetland pony who was kept very busy.

A new experience the Art Show went indoors this year financially down a little because mainly for extra expense but no rain worries.

A new fund raiser Landowners and friends Luncheon held at Murrindindi Station an all hands on the pump job and the ladies too it was a lot of work for all but financially very successful.

  • This year we hosted Indian student Bobby Sen.
  • Significant contribution to aged and infirm and youth.
  • Reg Scott who was instrumental in our formation as a club passed away,

This year we erected a safety fence around the extended care nursing home and laid out garden beds and wood chips in the garden area.

The Show Committee approached us for help, so the Club organised a display of local industry erected a large marque and organised about 15 exhibitors that created interest and helped ease the load on committee members.

The Art Show indoors again still getting established but slowly improving.

The Annual Luncheon this year at Nar Darak was again a success and our best money earner at this time.

The Club offered to help with cemetery clean up but there appeared to be lack of support or interest.

We had a very successful Calcutta that was held in the Molesworth Hotel. Adrian Sier was great help.

The Art Show John brought some new ideas.

  • The Catalogue with advertisements which paid for it's self
  • A campaign to boost attendance.
  • A main street BBQ evening to open the Art Show that was opened by the Commander of the Police Air Wing in support of the Helipad which was our prime object this year.

The Annual Luncheon was back at Murrindindi Station with over 3000 people attending it, was a great day from all points of view.

We received the problems of the old cemetery but could not get any local interest.

We helped the Yea Show with manpower.

Together with the Lions Club we celebrated Australia Day with the usual barbeque.

DECA driver training is funded by the car-washing contract. Graeme Broadbent's involvement with youth is extremely good.

We had 2 visits from The Belgrave Club and 2 exchange students as guest speakers.

We had a good year financially we can cover our commitment to the helipad and are now committed to support the life Education scheme.

This was the year Stephan Slucki was bulletin editor " SO What "Stephan is blind. The visitors sometimes got confused.

This was the time The Art Show started to come of age.

Our Luncheon day was held at "Landscape " Tallarook, Brendan Mc Carthy's stud. Lovely venue. Combined effort with our ladies. Attendance down a bit but socially a great day again.

The art show once again improved and seems to be firmly entrenched as our major fund raiser, it doesn't mean we can lay back it can always be improved on.

The Calcutta down at the recreation reserve was again a good night financially and socially.

The Helipad finally finished and our commitment paid off.

We made a commitment towards funding the Life Education mobile van which will travel the North East to educate young people about the dangers of drugs.

Rotary pegged a site on the railway land to give notice we would like to build a Rotary park there.

Australia Day presentation again catered for with Lions Club.

This year food hampers were distributed to needy families by select committee.

DECA has become our regular commitment since our formation. Two Yea boys were drivers of the week, about 80 schools were involved. Les Hall said since Rotary's inception not one of these young people have been involved in a serious accident. It is great to know our money raised is well spent.

The Calcutta was once again a successful night with a few ideas used.

In a year when most art shows felt the pinch and were down, ours was a little down on sales but certainly among the best of the art shows around and could only be described as a great show.

The Australia Day Breakfast again but this could be called the year of the Greek Dancers and there in lies another story.

This year our club sponsored the Probus Club of Yea. Royce Kronberg worked hard to get it formed and to this day it is so strong it has to limit it's membership to approx. 70,

What has become an annual event High school students were sponsored and taken to Shepparton by Rotarians to attend DECA. Also 8 High school students were sponsored to attend the Summer Science School at Latrobe University.

We also sponsored a student to sail on the "Alma Doepel" total cost $ 740.The sponsored lad said he gained new skills, it was a great success and he had a new found self confidence.

The Calcutta Night was socially a good night but numbers were down a bit.

The Art Show could hold it's head up and be counted among the best of them, it was successful financially although the economic climate at this time is not helpful.

The Great Victorian Bike Ride with some 5,500 bike riders converging on the town over night. It required total involvement of the community so our so out financial reward was not great but our assistance input was.

Once again DECA was funded as government funding ceased. International Rotary Convention was held in Melbourne.

The Club hosted a bus load of Rotarians from round the world at one meeting, that was a great night. 0ne was from Alaska who spoke on his area and club. One woman from the deep South couldn't understand our language, and one from South Africa was black big and about 8ft. An ideal bouncer, ruckman or fruit picker.

Australia Day function with the Lions Club again and a bowel scan project organised. The Club also installed an underground sprinkler system at Rosebank.

John Sinclair organised the Calcutta that went very well and was very rewarding financially.

The economy seems to have picked up a little as all the art shows report and ours was no exception we had a good show. The only problem was who sold the first prize painting twice? More later.

It was the first year of the paint your heart out project. The club decided to paint the Grandstand at the recreation reserve. It was all done in about 14 days. The Rosebank Hostel fence was another project this year.

The Australia Luncheon once again a good day.

We had Big Pete as a guest speaker on drugs and Aids awareness, the High School intend to use his services. We did offer the Peer Support program to the High School some years ago, but it was felt it was not needed but they are now taking it on board with Rotary assistance.

DECA still enjoys the support of Rotary.

District RYLA committee accepted our nomination Anthony Callander and he reported favourably on its value.

CRA Science Summer School - we have nominated 3 students.

Doug and Pat Zerbe hosted a Vietnamese student from the language centre for a week.

Received award district for the best bulletin. Quiz: Who was it said

"Everyone hands are up except the ones who are not here !!

"I got here early but everybody else got here earlier!! (an appeal against a fine)

Rotary Theme: Be A Friend ?

Secretary: David Evans

Treasurer: Lionel Heres

Art Show Director: Trevor Read

This year we lost 3 members - Bernie Quinlan, Bob Adams and Ash Long but we regained John Sinclair.

Our main involvements this year were the endurance ride our 2 days manning of the check points and assistance to Vets wood etc. this event was rewarding to the Club. Yea Spring festival to assist and man points for the bike races.

Melbourne Cup Calcutta at Yea Football Club Rooms numbers down a bit but still financially successful.

Yea Beef Expo well organised but Show attendances are down.

We had a small catering stand at the Zimbarbwe V/S 11 which was good fun and we made a profit.

The Art Show with Trevor Read in charge was a good one clearing over $ 6,000. Well done to all the members plus wives and young people for their valued help. Sausage sizzle on Australia Day was again an agenda item.

Rosebank: we had 2 working bees to erect a shed on a concrete base. Bowling Club bowls night between service club.

Friends of the Yea Library shifted to new premises and needed help to relocate Dick Dashwood and David Evans helped them out.

Paint Your Heart Out: The swimming pool kiosk and pump shed and surrounds carried out over 3 weekends.

A good year for youth. Greg Alexander reported Barney Ling was accepted for CRA Science Summer School. We sent 13 students to Siemens Science School in Melbourne 2 students to RYPEN at Lake Nillhicoote and we have nominated Kate Clavarino for a place at the Science Summer Forum.

The Presidents report began with "every Rotarian I ask to do a job simply said yes" and when an effort was required to make a project successful there was always a 100% response from members. There in I believe lies the Clubs strength.

This year we lost Trevor Read but gained John Bett who many years with Apex. John's experience with horses put him in the directors position for the endurance ride job. High School communications needed updating a much improved integrated understanding was arrived at by Greg Fletcher with headmaster Rob Flower and coordinator Steve Towsend.

Once again the Calcutta on the Melbourne Cup was held, socially a good night but for the effort put in does not seem to be a good revenue raiser.

The Art Show once again is our strongest fund raiser. The opening night continues to be a great idea both socially and sales wise Greg Alexander was the Director this year. The Rotary Club has been very lucky to have help from the ladies with expertise and energy Meg Heres an artist and exhibitor since its inception for some years has been the strength in setting the show up. Marion Bruere has also been a great help in the early years. This year Greg's wife Denise and daughter Corinne were a great help.

The Endurance ride, was again a success with Graeme Broadbent prominent as he has been for years gathering sponsorships etc. The DECA driver education for year 11 students continues under Rotary's sponsorship.

The Beef Expo at the Yea Show was again set up by Rotary for the Yea Show Committee. Les Hall does a great job here erecting yards spending hours at meetings re arrangements etc. Together with Lions Club we decided to host the Australia Day Breakfast without Shire support. Our Club presented Ben Bryceson for youth Encouragement Award. A clean up Australia Day approach by Kinglake residents saw our Club provide refreshments to them. The Yea Autumn Fest was held in March and Rotary assisted with the running of 2 bike races one Saturday and one on Sunday. Australia's Biggest Morning Tea run by the Anti Cancer Society. Our Club matched dollar for dollar which saw them benefit by $600. A busy year for community Service Director David Anderson.

It was a shame to lose Gordon Wiles the master of waffle but we were lucky to welcome Bob Dewar who happens to be well equipped with culinary expertise and has plenty of hands on Rotary experience behind him.

The Art Show reached new heights last year but Director David Anderson took it another step this year.

Our Club once again ran the Beef Expo at the Yea Show and the support it has adds to the quality of the Show.

Our Australia Day Breakfast in conjunction with the Lions Club seems to be more popular as the years roll on.

Rotary again has assisted the Autumn Festival committee in arranging the barricades and assist with the bike racing also the street parade.

Australia's Biggest Morning Tea was again helped by Rotary's dollar for dollar donation of $ 450.

Once again David Anderson put together a great Art Show. This certainly is the backbone of our fund raising. With 341 entries 47 sales grossing $ 21,500 - 00
