A Brief History

The Rotary Club of Sunbury was chartered on the 10th April 1973, sponsored by Rotary Club of Broadmeadows and on charter, had a membership of 23.

The first President was PP Ron Geyer who is still an active member of the club.

The club has presented 42 Paul Harris Fellow recognitions.
The club has hosted 20 overseas exchange students and sponsored 19 local young people to study in participating countries.

The club first hosted a student in 1974 - Christy Ocaja from Malaysia and the first outgoing student that was sponsored by the Club, also in 1974, was Dianne McKerrow who spent twelve months in Malaysia.

Internationally, the club has supported many Rotary International programs including the 3H, Polio Plus, RAWCS and ROMAC etc. The club has also hosted many GSE teams and members of the Friendship Exchange Program.
Community Service projects receive strong attention and support by the Rotary Club of Sunbury.

Some of the club's biggest and best projects are listed below.
• Raising of $12,000 to purchase an Ambulance for local community
• Raising of $14,000 for a Life-Pack 5 Unit for Sunbury Ambulance - the first life saved with this unit was that of a Rotarian!
• Building of a rotunda in 2000 - project funded by sale of bricks - cost of $50 and have the purchaser's name on the brick
• In 2000 the club organised for wooden toys to be made by a local resident. These toys were then distributed to charitable organisations (Salvation Army) etc. The club has distributed more than 300 wooden toys.
• In 2002 the club developed and introduced the Drive 120 Drive Program. The program allowed young learner drivers to clock up 120 hours of supervised driving before taking the test for the `P' plate licence.
• With 2005 being the Centenary Year, the Rotary Club of Sunbury intends to establish an extensive Rose Garden in Rotary Park, Sunbury.

The Rotary Club of Sunbury produced its first District Governor in 1999 - 2000 (Terry Grant) and is thrilled to support Mani Seneviratne and wife Sherwani during their role of District Governor in 2004-2005. The club is extremely proud of the work Mani and his team have done to date.
