At the April 19th meeting of The Rotary Club of Nathalia our guest speaker was Chris Sessions who attended with his wife, Wendy. "Sessho" and "Nanna" Sessions will be embarking on a fundraising journey in July 2012, calling it "Chuggin for Charity" and they came to our Club to tell us about their plans, with Chris doing the majority of the talking.

In November 2010 Chris and Wendy bought an old, worn-out 1973 C6100 model Chamberlain tractor from a property at Katandra. This tractor is unusual in that it has a bench seat (Wendy will be able to travel in the cabin with Chris). Since then, many, many hours of hard work and loving care have been put into getting this machine ready for appearances at various events and for the fundraising trip later this year. There was also plenty of work done on the "chuggavan" that will be towed by "Chugga", the Chamberlain tractor. There were, of course, plenty of costs involved to make this fundraiser possible and many businesses and individuals have helped enormously...most can be found on web page www.chugginforcharity.com. Once Chugga was finished, the trip was planned and Bowel Cancer Australia was the chosen charity.

Bowel cancer affects men and women, young and old and it is the second largest cause of cancer deaths. 1 in 12 Australians will be diagnosed with bowel cancer by 85 years of age, but, if caught in time, 90% of cases can be treated successfully.

Chugga made his public appearance debut at the Tatura Rotary Fruit and Vegetable market on Christmas Eve, 2011. On 4th February, 2012 he appeared at Tatura Angling Club's "Fish Off"; then on Easter Saturday he was at "Easter on the Goulburn", Toolamba Fishing Club. He has been booked at a number of other places leading up to chug off day on Saturday, July 21st. On that day, the Rotary Club of Nathalia will put on a BBQ and Chugga will be making an appearance in our town. It is hoped that many people will come along, support this fundraiser and cheer on Chris and Wendy on their big adventure...our Club will certainly do advertising in plenty of time to help things along.

Chugga will leave Dhurringile on July 21st and will travel 9,000 kms during a 4 month period (travelling at an average of 42 km/h), before returning home to Dhurringile by mid November. The journey will cover a big section of our wide brown land with parts of Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland and Northern Territory being visited, all in the hope of raising funds and awareness for Bowel Cancer Australia. The original trip has been revised already, so as to be at the Birdsville races during the first weekend in September. Chris also said that he will make as many fishing stops as possible during this trip.

The web page (click here), set up by Wendy, will be updated regularly. As Chris will not touch a computer, Wendy will also be the one to let their supporters know how they are progressing, paste photographs of their trip, etc.

The Rotary Club of Nathalia intends to re-invite Sessho and Nanna Sessions after they have settled back into their "normal lives" again. It will be good to hear of their adventures and successes, in person.

The Rotary Club of Nathalia also encourages other Rotary Clubs to be as supportive of this couple.

CHUGGA comes to Nathalia

On Saturday 28th July CHUGGA came to town and our the Rotary Club of Nathalia set up its marquee and BBQ in the plantation, in time for lunch. We cooked and sold sausages & onions in bread and were quite well patronised.

Thank you to all our customers...we raised $220 for Bowel Cancer Research and this was put into the account set up by Chris & Wendy Sessions. We were able to have a look inside their "Chuggavan and it looked quite a comfortable "home away from home". After a couple of hours we waved our goodbyes to these adventurers and wish them all the best for a safe and enjoyable fundraiser.

We will have them back as guest speakers again, once they have settled back into some "normality at home, and look forward to hearing their stories.
