The Rotary Club of Euroa is pleased to support local engineer Monica George from Mangalore as she prepares to visit Fiji as a volunteer on this great project
The project was started in March 1985 by the Rotary Club of Lautoka following cyclones that devastated large areas of Fiji and left thousands homeless. The Fiji Rotahomes Project aims to provide permanent accommodation for disadvantaged households (squatters and homeless people). At present, a model village called Koroipita has been constructed for approximately 350 residents. The next stage of design and construction will add 220 homes to the existing model village and increase the population of Koroipita to about 1300. The aim of the Koroipita village is:
To provide villagers with community development programs as well as quality support and training to enable them to be involved with their community and be financially independent. The driver behind the project is Rotarian Peter Drysdale. A senior engineer, John Yalden and his wife Emma have already flown over to Fiji and Monica will be working directly with them on the project Monica will be involved in Engineering design - road infrastructure, earthworks, water and sewerage reticulation, stormwater drainage and services layout design and project management. On a Community level she will help establish a plant nursery and other local facilities. |
