The Rotary Club of Eltham is working in partnership with the Rotary Club of Muyenga, Uganda and the Indigo Foundation in support of the development of communities in the Budaka District of Uganda. It is estimated that 46% of the district's population is below 15 years of age, with a high proportion of orphans and vulnerable children as a result of years of political and social instability and the extensive occurrence of HIV/AIDS. The orphans and vulnerable children project of the Indigo Foundation aims to improve the lives, health and wellbeing of these children by building the capacity of local organisations in Budaka to provide care and support to them, providing basic needs such as school books to children who would not otherwise attend school, improving the ability of schools to support orphans and other vulnerable children, and increasing access to clean water through protection of natural springs. The Rotary Club of Eltham has successfully supported the construction of springwater protection structures in 2009-10 and are now proceeding with a Global Grant Proposal for a $30,000 project comprising: i. Construction of 10 Spring Water Protection Structures to assure potable water supplies to communities in proximity of the Katira Primary School and the Bwibere Primary School. Currently, spring water outlets are severely contaminated by sediment and animal faeces. Protection from stock, and construction of filterbed and concrete outlet walls will enable easy access to clean potable water - a major contribution to community health. ii. Supply of 80 school desks to each of the Katira and Bwibere primary schools to encourage school attendance and provide a conducive learning environment. Many classes are currently held on floors. iii. Supply of volleyball nets, netball and soccer goals to each school to provide sporting and recreational activities for students and the community; reinforcing community identity. In parallel with the project, sister school relationships have been developed between the Glen Katherine and Eltham North Primary Schools in Eltham and the Katira and Bwibere Primary Schools in the Budaka District of Uganda to promote international cross-cultural understanding. The Global Grant Proposal has been facilitated with the support of District 9600 in Queensland, a participant in the Rotary Future Vision Pilot program.
