One of the signature programs of Rotary International which Corowa Rotary Club has adopted with enthusiasm over recent years has been Youth Exchange. The program not only requires the Club to sponsor and send a local student to an overseas Club for 12 months but in return the expectation is that the local Club hosts an overseas student for the same period of time. This leads to wonderful opportunities for building mutual understanding and friendship as students are hosted by families and are enrolled at Corowa High School. During the twelve month period, hosted students meet with other exchange students at educational and social weekends at Melbourne University's Dookie Campus; go on a 'Rock to Reef' safari; attend a ski weekend hosted by Myrtleford Rotary Club; attend a social weekend hosted by Tatura Rotary Club; attend excursions organised by Corowa High School and engage in activities organised through host families and the Corowa Rotary Club. Over the past few years, Corowa Rotary Club has hosted a student each year, and this year two students overlapped for 6 months. Anders Larsen from Denmark arrived in Corowa in July 2009, and Mathias Jacobs from Brazil arrived in February 2010. After his farewell speech in early July, Anders returned home to Denmark while Mathias is with us for another 6 months. Anders had a fabulous year with the Corowa Rotary Club, and travelled with his host families to South Australia, Sydney, Queensland, Tasmania and Melbourne. He partnered a debutant at a local Deb Ball; followed the Bulldogs in the AFL; sampled the heat of Uluru; climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge and snorkelled on the Great Barrier Reef as well as fitting in many more activities than most Aussie students his age would have experienced! |
