The Rotary Club of Coburg donates a $1000.00 to the Royal District Nursing Service – Moreland Centre.

The RDNS was first established in 1885 as a community service with one nurse and now has a staff of 1,200 nurses with 400 support staff. It operates through 22 sites, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The service cares for 40,000 patients a year and attends 9,600 patients a day.

One of the major medical conditions with an ageing population is incontinence, which affects approximately 12% of the clients and this figure is increasing. Incontinence can be caused by either nerve damage or other medical problems.

One of the side affects of the incontinence is that people can become withdrawn. Until now it has been difficult to determine the extent of the problem without lengthy and invasive practices.

Now a portable Bladder Scanning machine has been developed which has made diagnosis simpler and this can be performed in a client’s home. The machine operates similar to an ultra sound and can determine how much urine is left in the bladder.

Once the diagnosis has been made the problem can be treated by a specialist nurse or otherwise an appointment with the doctor. The Bladder Scanner costs $17,000.00 and the service is now trying to raise the money to purchase a machine
