The Rotary Club of Yarrawonga Mulwala sponsored the Rotary Club of Cobram and the charter was granted on 18th August, 1954 with 23 foundation members.
The Rotary Club of Cobram has been involved in serving the local community, and in addition to international projects during its 50 years it has provided financial and/or voluntary assistance to the Ottrey Homes Retirement Village Complex which consists of 48 hostel units, 32 independent living units, and 12 retirement villas with an estimated market value of $6.8 million dollars. The Village operates now under a separate legal identity with a board of management elected from the community. The majority of the board of management are Rotarians.
The Cobram Swimming pool, Senior Citizens Clubrooms, Mivo Park, Colgan Park, Barooga Botanical gardens, Quinn Island project, landscaping of the Cobram Civic Centre surrounds, assisting with the rebuilding of the Cobram Scout Hall Rotary Art Show, highway beautification and tree planting, ‘Adopt a Highway’ litter removal, BBQ area adjacent Cobram Barooga Bridge, Hospital Fete, installing Toc H alarms, manning gates at the Cobram Agricultural Show and at Rockarama walkathons, cattle projects, Rotaract, Probus, Rotary exchange students, local schools participating in the Ian Murphy Memorial Debating competition, interclub visits, Australia Day function and Awards, Senior Citizens Christmas dinner, wrecking the National Bank building and selling the materials, Rotarian Ern Gould trained 3 sheepdogs and sold them raising $ 1000 for Australian Rotary Research Fund, culvert and track construction at the Moira Kelly Open Door Farm for children near Kilmore, support for Rotary Overseas Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC), Fred Hollows Foundation medical and educational equipment for refugees in Lima, Peru, Polio Plus - an ongoing project in the eradication of polio throughout the world, and Paul Harris Fellowships are just some of the projects served by the Rotary Club of Cobram.
The Rotary Club of Cobram acted as sponsor club for Rotary Club of Finley in 1958 and as sponsor club for Rotary Club of Tocumwal in 1985.
A book has been printed celebrating the 50 Year History of The Rotary Club of Cobram 1954 – 2004. Edited by PP Bob Cornish ( foundation and current member of the Rotary Club of Cobram), it will be launched at the Rotary Club of Cobram’s 50th Anniversary Dinner at Cobram Barooga Golf Club on Saturday 23rd October 2004. Guest speaker at the dinner will be Rev. Warren Bartlett, a former foundation member of Rotary Club of Cobram.
