| The "Dudumia Rural Water Supply Project" | ||
In essence the project, an initiative of the Rotary Club of Goroka, in conjunction with Gora Community, is to construct a reticulated water supply to the Dudumia Community, located in the upper part of the Asaro District, Eastern Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea. Currently water has to be carried (by women and children) a considerable distance (1 kilometre or more) on a daily basis from a supply point that is subject to contamination and not always reliable. The proposed reticulated supply will improve reliability of supply, water quality, eliminate the daily chore of carting water, allow more time for children to attend school (water carting currently has precedence over schooling), help develop the local economy and improve health of the people. The project will see the construction of a small concrete dam on a local stream some 800 metres from the village, the laying of approx 5 km of pvc pipe lines throughout the community including connections to a school, HIV/AIDS Resource Centre, communal water points and churches.
