BUSH FIRE
UPDATE
JANUARY 2010

FLASHBACK -BLACK SATURDAY

Nearly 12 months ago -February 7th 2009, after weeks of drought and 10 days of high temperatures, Alexandra & Rotary Club Members, after a day of tension and little information, were alerted to the arrival of survivors from Marysville, Narbethong and Buxton, at the Secondary College.

THE CLUB'S REACTION- THE RELIEF PERIOD

Club Members were quickly in action, led by Tom Farrell calling in help to cater for the survivors that night and Kent Radford, next morning being asked by the Shire to organise the receipt and distribution of donated goods , already flowing into the town. The flow became a river and flowed for many weeks.

After a meeting with the Shire on Tuesday, both projects became Rotary Projects and the Club Board established a Bush Fire Committee and a Bush Fire Fund. Tom became the official Red Cross representative in charge of catering and Kent being Supremo of Goods distribution. Catering continued for two weeks, serving some 1400 Meals per day, with help from Holmesglen TAFE, until DHS and the Shire closed the Relief Centre.

Goods receipt and distribution continued for 10 weeks, until DHS transferred the operation to Melbourne. Most Rotarians, 200 community volunteers spent over 8000 hours of sorting and distribution. Rotary District 9790 provided $ 5000 to reimburse Gaudions for use of the Cherry Shed.

Slow payment of Appeal funds and economic difficulties for local traders led the Club to seek funds from other Rotary Clubs and the community to distribute Vouchers to survivors, about $ 80,000 was obtained from Melbourne and District Clubs etc and distribute through DMK Wealth from March to July. Further funds from Mitchell Health will be distributed in Autumn 2010 for Plants as people revive their gardens.
