Bush Fire Notes 13th February 2009

The region has been devastated! An enormous number of lives lost, many still missing and the fires are still burning!

From this disaster, the strength of any community is surely tested. We are proud to say the response of the local community, the region, the State & even the generosity of our Interstate cousins has been outstanding; nay magnificent.

The amount of new and used clothing, footwear & food that has come in has been mind boggling and at the moment we are not in need of any more used goods. So if you are trying to be the good Samaritan, great,  but please hold off sending down any more material without conferring with theRotary Club of Alexandra co-ordinator of Incoming Goods Kent Radford on 0400 674 327. Storage space is becoming an issue.

If you are in a position to donate goods and services and you would like to, contact Kent first and we will co-ordinate when it is needed by contacting you, please do not just send it down.

If any Rotary Club wishes to assist with programs; or projects contact the Secretary of the Rotary Club of Alexandra – Brian Dillon on 03 5772 2973 AH to register interest, but please do not put response time lines on programs or projects, as the fires are still burning, and determining what, where & when assistance  is required is still far too early. As I am writing this there is a fire front about 7 km south east of us & another 5 km west of us and it is coming towards us.

The Rotary Club of Alexandra has established a special account where other Rotary Clubs, or any individual can directly deposit  funds.  These funds will be solely spent in the area of the devastation.  The account name is Rotary Club of Alexandra 2009 Bush Fire Relief Fund, the BSB is 083 503 and the account number is 833871572. If anyone has a query contact the Rotary Club of Alexandra, Treasurer, Brian Stevenson 03 5774 7503. This is the area of greatest need, money!

We have had many people from all over the world contact the RC of Alexandra as a result of World wide press coverage, seeking reassurance that we are OK.  Contacts that have made through Youth Exchange, GSE, International scholars and the many other avenues of service through the  Rotary family.
