Volume 1

1976-2004

A Short Introduction to some of our Past District Governors telling us of the dreams and aspirations of the World Presidents of their year, what the year of dedication and service has meant to each Past Governor and up to five of the events or happenings which had the most impact on Rotarians of District 9790 and their Clubs.

District Governor 2004 -2005, Mani Seneviratne, invited all Past Officers of Rotary to contribute to this record of District Governors from 1st July 1957 when District 280 came into being, as part of the Centenary Celebrations at District Conference at Bendigo in March 2005 with a special display to remind all Rotarians of the continuing role of our long serving Past Governors ....

FOREWORD

Acknowledgement

This book has become a reality due to the interest shown by the Past Governors.

My intention has been to store the work and information of all Past Governors for historical purposes and future reference. If Rotary International had not stored the information of our forefathers we would not have had information to celebrate our 100 years anniversary. This triggered me to ensure that the work of our Past Governors are collected and stored.

I thank PDG Don Haberecht for volunteering to compile the first book and to Past Governors for forwarding their work to the District. I am sure this work will continue to the future to store and preserve the work of the Past Governors. This could be a great reference guide.

I hope these pages would be of benefit to all Rotarians of the District who wish to have a glimpse of history of District 9790.

Mani Seneviratne

Angus Mitchell

The late Sir Angus Mitchell,
Australia's first
World President of
Rotary International said:

"I'd like to think that when I'm gone,
That I had filled a useful post.
That here and there I'd paid my fare
With more than idle talk or boast
That I had taken gifts divine,
The breath of life and manhood fine
And I had used them now and then
In Service for my fellow men",
