What Are The Awards ?
The Awards were established to recognise the outstanding community service given by people with disabilities, who by their actions, serve as "shining examples" to the community.
Through their commitment to helping others in the Rotary spirit of "Service Above Self", they provide a significant contribution to the community. The awards are presented each year usually at the Awards Ceremony. The "Shine On" Trophy is specially designed with the Shine On logo.
First presented in Brisbane in 1993, the Shine On Awards was the initiative of Past President Bernie Jaks, A.O., P.H.F. and of District 9600. From 1993 to 1996 the D9600 committee invited all Clubs in Australia to nominate candidates for an Awards Ceremony to be held in Brisbane. Each year a Roll of Honour of awards was sent to Clubs Australia wide.

In 1997 and 1998 Victorian Rotary Districts, operating under the auspices of the Queensland committee, conducted its own Awards Ceremony hosted by the Rotary Club of Keilor East. From 1999, through the generous sponsorship of J.B.Were and Son, Stockbrokers, the combined Victorian Districts committee was able to administer the awards in Victoria and established separate age group awards, based on common selection criteria, for youth and adults.
In 1999 the Awards Ceremony was hosted by the Rotary Club of Brimbank Central when from the total of 40 nominees major awards were presented to 3 out of the 7 youth nominees and 8 of the 33 adults. Sir Gustav Nossal presented the awards.
In 2000 the Rotary Club of South Yarra hosted the Awards Ceremony for 41 nominees with 3 of the 6 youth and 8 of the 35 adults receiving the Shine On Awards trophy. Dr Rhonda Galbally, A.O. presented the awards.
Who can be Nominated ?
Nominations are invited for people from any field of endeavour and the same nomination form is used for both categories of nominee.
- Candidates must be:
(i) Youth: age 15 to 20 years at 1 January in the year in which the award is made
(ii) Adult: 21 years and above - Nominee's consent to nomination must be obtained prior to nomination
- Nominee must be a resident of Australia for a minimum of 3 years
- Nominators could be required to furnish verification of nominee's disability
- Nominators must complete all sections of the nomination form and identify and record evidence of dedicated community service, above and beyond self
- For re-nomination a candidate will need to show significant development of previous achievements or development of new endeavours.
All candidates for the award can expect to receive recognition at some level although not all will receive the Shine On Award trophy. All Candidates are presented with a Certificate of Commendation.

How Are Nominations Made ?
Nominations for Victoria will be made to the Shine On Awards Rotary Victorian Districts committee. They may be made from any source, but usually from Rotary Clubs.
Nominators should read the Nominating Guidelines and complete all sections of the nomination form providing clear and concise details.
