Computers 4 Kids

Brief Introduction

Computer skills make a significant contribution to workplace productivity. The Computers-4-Kids project refurbishes ex-government and corporate PCs for distribution to disadvantaged students, and others, including bushfire victims. The Computers-4-Kids project is a Microsoft Approved Refurbisher. It has recently begun installing Windows and Office 2007 on donated PCs.

I was guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Kyabram on the “Computer for Kids Program” (C4K) a follow up from our District Conference.

The Rotary Club of Kyabram has proceeded with the program under the auspice of the contract that the Rotary Club of Appin Park Wangaratta has in place with Microsoft.

In September 2010, three Rotarians from Appin Park ran a five week activity program at Yarrunga Primary School, Wangaratta for a group of grade six students who had been selected for the program because they did not have computers at home. The students refurbished some donated computers and installed original Microsoft software on them before taking them home for personal use. Once the student refurbished their own computers they did others which will be given to bushfire victims who are doing a program through Typo Station at Cheshunt.

Responding to the evaluation of the activity program the grade sixers reckoned the main benefit was that they now had “bragging rights” with the other grade sixers in that the others knew nothing about installing software on computers.
