INTRODUCTION

The Aim

The purpose of the Royce Abbey Awards is to encourage new members who have been with Rotary for only a few years to enjoy the benefit of using their talents in furthering the object of Rotary at Club, District and International level.

The Rotarian would be recognised in his or her early days of membership as a willing participant in club activities.

Since its inception five years ago more than 100 Royce Abbey Awards have been bestowed on Rotarians both domestically and internationally.

Royce Abbey Awards

The award encourages clubs to contribute US$1000 through the R.I. Foundation to the Royce and Jean Abbey Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarship, a program that is available to assist the training of young men and women in developing countries. Clubs donate the money, in recognition of a meritorious Rotarian in his or her early days of membership in their club.

(Monies received are placed in the Foundation Permanent Fund. Be aware that these donations are not tax deductible.)

Brief History

THE ROYCE & JEAN ABBEY ENDOWMENT FUND was established by The Rotary Foundation through the monetary support of the 1988-89 Rotary District Governors in the year Royce Abbey was the President of Rotary International.
Past District Governors, Richard Wallace, District 7470 and Al Slaggert, District 6310, canvassed Past District Governors of 1988-89 and a fund was established within The Rotary Foundation to recognise the success of their year.

The Fund was approved by the Trustees of the Foundation in December 1999 with the following conditions:

(1) The earnings of the fund could be used when the balance reached US$150,000.

(2) The earnings were to be used for Humanitarian projects to enhance the capabilities of Food Processors, Foresters, and other Agricultural and Environmental Researchers and University Teachers from developing countries to use new skills in their home countries.

(3) Each application for funding was to be made through The Rotary Foundation.

Training will be conducted in Australia at various Universities and Institutions over approximately 3 months, and administered at no cost to the Rotary Foundation by The ATSE Crawford Fund which is the world’s most successful National support organisation for international agricultural research and training for sustainable food and fibre production.

The Royce and Jean Abbey Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships

Past President David Abbey of the Rotary Club of Shepparton Central, Victoria, is chairman of The Royce and Jean Abbey Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarship.

Each Royce Abbey Award carries with it a contribution from the recipient's Rotary club of US$1,000 to the Royce and Jean Abbey Endowed Fund within The Rotary Foundation.

Interest earned from the fund is used to sponsor up to three agricultural related scholarships each year for eligible candidates from the Asia Pacific Region.

Each scholarship is in the form of financial assistance for three months of practical training in Australia to develop skills and knowledge which can be taken back to improve farming practices within the community of the recipient. Past recipients have included dairy farmers, agricultural workers, teachers, a water engineer, a quarantine worker and others.

The committee partners with Australian Rotary clubs to -
• Identify potential recipients.
• Arrange appropriate practical training
• Assist with accommodation for the first three months of the scholarship.

Each fellowship covers travel, accommodation, assistance in obtaining visas and tuition up to approximately US$10,000 for a period of 3 months.

A certificate is presented after the successful completion of a scholarship.

Each awardee is encouraged to visit Rotary Clubs during their stay in Australia and after returning to their home country.
