An example of a house constructed through the Rotahomes Project

Recently the Rotary Club of Euroa sponsored civil engineer Monica George, from Seymour, in a volunteering program with the RAWCS Fiji Rotahomes Project. The project began in 1985 following the devastation caused by Cyclones Eric and Nigel which left thousands homeless on Fiji’s main island Viti Levu especially in the areas of Lautoka and Ba.

Monica arrived home last week and spoke to the Rotary Club of Euroa during their club meeting on Thursday November 26th.

Monica is proud of her accomplishments during her five months in Fiji. Her main focus was to work on the development of Koroipita Model Town which is situated near Lautoka. Tasks included the design for provision of services to the town; such as water reticulation, road access, storm water drainage, sewage reticulation and electric power.

Eighty one families currently live in Koroipita Model Town. With on going funding from New Zealand, community groups i.e.: Rotary and the Fijian Government implementation of the next stage will provide a further 160 houses, schools and shops.

Monica also worked on the design of housing for Koroipita Model Town. Housing is provided for indigenous Fijians and Indo- Fijians. The houses have been designed to include large living areas, internal partitions and ventilation. It goes with out saying that all structures must be cyclone resistant.

Monica concluded by saying that time is fluid on Fiji but with perseverance goals can be achieved, communication is crucial and you must never under estimate the strength and power of women.
