| Rotary Offers Alternatives to "Schoolies Week" | |||||||
| There are alternatives to schoolies week I read an interesting and rather sad "schoolies" article in "the Age" recently and it has prompted me to write to let you know that there are alternatives to getting "wasted" on the Gold Coast or elsewhere. Our Rotary Club (Frankston Long Island, D9820) organised an "alternative schoolies" program last year that saw 11 local year 12 students finish their school year by volunteering in Cambodia. It was a life-changing experience for all of them. One in particular was going to be a marine biologist, but on falling in love with the Khmer children decided to take on teaching instead. She is absolutely loving her decision and getting high distinctions in all her university exams. One day she intends to go back to teach in Cambodia. This year we are taking 15 students to Cambodia, where they will work at Krasang Roleung Primary School. They will be painting the classrooms and planting vegetable gardens, teaching English to the children and doing various other jobs as needed. They will also be helping with rice drops to outlying villages affected by the devastating floods that have only just subsided and assisting in other ways. One of our team leaders is already in Cambodia preparing for work to be done. The students will have a fantastic holiday, experience the amazing Khmer culture and food and hopefully it will be another life-changing experience for all of them. I would like to challenge other clubs and organisations to follow our example and encourage students to do something worthwhile when they finish school. There are hundreds of schools and orphanages crying out for volunteers in developing countries and this program is a way to help them, as well as create a wonderful experience for our own students.
