Opportuniies for New Generations Programs in Your Club

A synopsis to assist in planning your year for students and youth programs
 
PROGRAM Debating Competition Interact Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA)
What is it 32 teams from schools throughout our District compete a knock out competition culminating in a final at the District 9790 Conference at the end of March each year. Interact is a Rotary sponsored service club for young people. Made up of members ages 14-18 or secondary
school age,Interact gives young people an opportunity to participate in fun, meaningful service projects.
MUNA is where students come together to participate in a simulated United Nations General Assembly conference. They aim to increase international understanding of world issues and to promote peace and goodwill.

District participation All Clubs may sponsor teams. Interact Club of Riddells Creek All Clubs may sponsor teams.
Typical events Knock out competition with teams of 3 members, coached by a school staff member or Rotarian. Students gain the tools and skills necessary to develop into responsible, productive members of society. They participate in community service projects and fund raising. National MUNA is usually held on the third weekend in August in Canberra. It takes place at the Old Parliament House in the House of Representatives hamber. It provides an opportunity for 2 students in Years 11or 12 to have a personal exper-ience of how the United Nations General Assembly works.
How Rotarians can get involved Approach your local secondary schools for interested students and coaches. Partner with other clubs to organise an Interact event. Sponsor local secondary school students to attend.

PROGRAM National Youth Science Forum Rotaract Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)
What is it

The National Youth Science Forum provides a unique experience for some 500 of Australia's best Year 11 school students who are interested in science. Each student is exposed to the widest possible range of study and career opportunities in science, technology and engineering so that they can make an informed choice for further studies. Participants are chosen after a personal interview by the interview committee.

Rotaract is a club for anyone aged between 18 and 30 years of age. Rotaract is a community service, social and self development club.Rotaractors meet regularly to plan and participate in social and community service activities. They work in conjunction with Rotary clubs in fund raising activities. They aim to develop responsible citizens who will perform to high standards in their working life and their community involvements. RYLA is an interactive, experientially-based leadership conference offered in the last week of November each year; 7 days and 6 nights, to support 18 - 30 year olds leading in their community and in their profession. Each RYLA is unique in terms of process and content. It is the outcomes that are similar.
Participants 28 Year 11 students are chosen for a 2 week course in Canberra in January each year. This is aimed at high achiever students. Young adults between the ages of 18 and 39 years. Young adults between the ages of 18 and 30 years.
District participation Active. Rotaract Clubs:
Albury-Wodonga, Darebin, Diamond Valley, Riddells Creek and Sunbury
Active.
Typical events 2 week live in event at the Australian National University. Meet every 2 weeks.
AIMS
  • • To develop professional and leadership skills
  • • To emphasise respect for the rights of others based on the recognition of the worth of each individual.
  • • To recognise the dignity and value of all useful occupations as opportunities to serve.
  • • To recognise, practice and promote ethical standards as leadership qualities and vocational responsibilities.
  • • To develop knowledge and understanding of the needs, problems and opportunities in the community and worldwide.
  • • To promote opportunities for personal and activities to serve the community and promote international understanding and goodwill towards all people.
  • The program includes the following:
    •Fundamentals of leadership.
    •Importance of communications skills in effective leadership.
    •Ethics of positive leadership.
    •Problem-solving and conflict manage- men.
    •What Rotary is and what it does for the local community.
    •Building self-confidence and self-esteem.
    •Elements of community and global citizenship while reflecting issues of local relevance in a manner approp- riate to local customs.
    How Rotarians can get involved Sponsor a local secondary school student to attend. Establish a new Club. Act as a mentor in advising members of a local Rotaract club.Participate in joint projects. Sponsor a participant. Promote the program in your community. Join the Supporter Team.

    PROGRAM Rotary Youth Program for Enrichment (RYPEN) Science Experience Youth Exchange
    What is it RYPEN is a program of weekend seminars for young people between the ages of 14 and 17 years. Its principal aim is the communication of a series of ideas, problems and social experiences, which will assist the young participants in forming their own values and moral standards. The Science Experience is a program that encourages students in years 9 or year 10 to consider science, engineering and technology as an interesting and a worthwhile subject and career choice. Almost 3,000 places are available Australia wide at selected universities and tertiary intitutions.

    Youth Exchange Program is an
    oppor tunity for young people to experience a year of education overseas in a wide range of countries. It also provides many personal experiences and oppor- tunities during and after the year of exchange.
    The program is recognised by part- icipants, parents and schools as the best student exchange program in the world and it is backed up by caring and dedicated Rotarians who provide the infrastructure of the program. Students stay with host families as arranged by the Host Rotary Club.
    Participants are chosen after a personal interview by the interview committee.

    Typical events RYPEN aims to deliver the following outcomes:
    • Increased motivation and improved life skills.
    • Better self-image and more pride in themselves.
    • An understanding of setting and achieving goals.
    • The confidence to overcome failure and take control of their future.
    A 3 day program conducted in a number university campuses and tertiary institutions in Melbourne and regional cities.The program includes hands-on science practical activities in laboratories. Incoming and outbound students have much in common. All are hosted by sponsor Rotary clubs and live in the homes of their hosts for varying periods of time. They attend local schools and participate in their host Clubs activities. They have the opportunity to travel to scenic holiday destinations in their host country.
    Friendships made are life long.
