EXCITING NEW YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES

New Generations Exchange

In 2011-2012 Rotary District 9790 will undertake a new youth program, a New Generations Hort Term Exchange with Rotary District 1950 in Germany. The exchange will see District 9790 host a New Generations team from Germany in March 2012 and District 9790 will send a team to Germany in May 2012.

New Generations Exchange (NGE) is an opportunity for young people aged 18 - 25 to experience the world of youth exchange. The team comprises 4 or 5 young people and a team leader, often a Rotaractor or a past Long Term Youth Exchange participant.

Any young person within the age range may apply, irrespective of whether they are sons or daughters of Rotarians. The cost of the exchange is borne by the participants and this will be advised at the time the call is made for applications.

NGE team members traditionally spend three or four days in a host Club with host families and undertake a range of cultural and vocational visits, undertake speaking engagements at Clubs and can also visit places of interest in the host District. It is an ideal opportunity for young people to observe what is happening in their vocational area in another country as well.

It can be looked upon as a 'Junior Group Study Exchange (GSE) type' exchange, except it is funded by the participants themselves and sons and daughters of Rotarians are not excluded from the program. The program is open to all 18 - 25 year old young people who may have just finished their secondary education and are having a "gap year", are still studying (or have recently completed higher education) or are in employment.

Applications for District 9790 Team members will open in July. Expressions of interest from Clubs willing the host the visiting NGE team from Germany will open as well. Interested applicants should have an interest in further developing their career goals and vocational knowledge as well as furthering international good will and understanding.

Further information can be provided by contacting Charles Knight (Rotary Club of Tallangatta).

Short Term Youth Exchange

District 1950 in Germany have also sent 5 short term youth exchange participants to our District both this year and last year. They were hosted by District 9790 Clubs both before and after the "Rock to Reef" tour which they joined the long term youth exchangers on.

District 9790 now has the opportunity to send 5 or more 14 to 17 year old students to Germany in December 2011 / January 2012. The German District(s) will arrange hosting and organise a ski and/or cultural tour.

This would be a great opportunity for young people from our District to experience a white Christmas, improve their German language skills and benefit from having a cultural experience.
