Learn◊Grow Project Update
Food Plant Solutions Rotarian Action Group

Some great news from Rotary International in February 2011 with the official recognition of the Food Plant Solutions Rotarian Action Group. The mission for this Action Group is summed up in the statement of purpose included in the application:

The purpose of the Food Plant Solutions Action Group is to support the District 9830 Learn◊Grow project in assisting developing nations to achieve food security and reduce malnutrition. The Learn◊Grow project was established to promote and support the use of the Food Plants International database of food plants to help people in developing countries learn about and grow the best local foods to match their nutritional needs. The Food Plant Solutions Actio Group will achieve this by embracing the following objectives:

button Promote the establishment of Learn◊Grow groups in districts internationally.
button Encourage these groups to implement Learn◊Grow programs on local food production in the 81 developing countries with the highest rates of infant and child mortality, guided by an established Protocol For Engagement.
button Facilitate communication between Learn◊Grow groups so that experience in delivery of local food production programs is transferred between groups and enable continuous improvement in delivery.

The central concept of Food Plant Solutions is that just supplying food is not sufficient to solve hunger problems. The food needs to be local, readily available and fully nutritional. The project is able to provide the information and resources to support the delivery of programs in any country in need in any part of the world. Nutritional food when given to children over a reasonable period aids in growth of intelligence and energy which in turn leads to self-sufficiency. The Learn◊Grow approach ensures ongoing ownership of the nutritious food solution by each local community group.

We submitted the original application two years ago but RI has maintained a moratorium on action groups until recently. There are currently 13 action groups listed on the RI website and I believe there were a couple of others under consideration at the same time as ours. However, with only a limited number of action groups internationally this certainly provides Learn◊Grow with significant exposure on an international platform.
