DISASTER AID AUSTRALIA - An Introduction

Disaster Aid Australia provides an innovative Australian-based humanitarian aid package: one that provides those in need with a new start in family units within their communities.

"A home plus water equals a vision" and a helpful start for survivors of disaster areas.

daaimage01
The Disaster Aid Australia (DAA) Family Survival Pack contains a tent complete with basic necessities such as blankets, cooking pots and eating utensils and provides all the equipment needed to start life over again with dignity.

The Family Survival Pack tent is designed to connect up to four tents to form a school, hospital or even a community centre. When the disaster struck survivors have been housed, drinking water is the key to progress in developing countries as it improves health and facilitates quick recovery following natural disasters.

And all are delivered by Australians on behalf of Australian Rotarians.

DART (Disaster Aid Rotary Team) members are on call at short notice to fly to disaster zones to represent Disaster Aid Australia (DAA) and supervise receiving the DAA packs.
DART volunteers go through an intensive training course designed to put applicants through their paces in scenarios designed to stimulate real life disasters. It is about learning how to think on your feet, how to cope with pressure and how to handle fatigue. They learn how to look after others and themselves if they were in a disaster zone.

DART members main role is to ensure aid is delivered, and to this end they have recorded every single box sent to a disaster zone, complete with an identifier, family name, number of family members and photographs of each recipient with the aid - no other aid agency can provide such 100% accountability.

Pakistanfamily DART members train suitable locals as volunteers in tent erection. They are also very quick in recognising those who are genuinely in need and their assessments are beyond reproach, despite pressures to provide aid from those who don't need it. They are provided with digital cameras to provide the recording of their activities. This saves the time of DART members and reduces the security risk.

In the Pakistan floods disaster in 2010, Disaster Aid International (DAI) provided survival boxes, complete with large tents, to 292 families. Additionally 8 Skyjuice water filtration plants were sent, each capable of providing up to 10,000 litres of water per day indefinitely and 5000 personal LifeStraws from Disaster Aid UK.

LifeStraw is a filtration system for fresh drinking water for one year for one adult and up to two years for a child.

SkyHydrant System

The SkyHydrant System is a low pressure, high flow, ultra-filtration technology meeting World Health Organisation requirements for safe drinking water. The SkyHydrant water filtration unit is a lightweight, sustainable and affordable water filtration system for humanitarian projects and emergency and disaster relief.
The SkyHydrant will significantly remove biological contaminates and pathogens including bacteria, viruses, protozoa, cysts, parasites etc making the water safe to drink.
The SkyHydrant will remove turbidity and dirt from water. However, the dirtier the water, the more often the filter needs cleaning to remove the build up of sediments on the filter fibres.
The SkyHydrant will not-remove salt or dissolved chemicals and minerals. If these contaminates are present at unsafe levels, your water may not be suitable for filtering and drinking.

The SkyHydrant is easily maintained.
Manual cleaning is done at least once a day by using a backflow method.
Chemical cleaning is done once a month using a chlorine solution.

Produces up to 1000 litres of clean drinking water per hour.
No power or chemicals required for the filtration process.
No replacement filters required.
Effectively filters most non-saline surface and ground waters.
Quick and easy setup produces clean water instantly.
Is lightweight - easily stored, transported and redeployed.
Can be wall mounted or freestanding.
No technical skills needed for setup, operation or maintenance.
Gravity fed under low water pressure - high water pressure set up options available.
Can be used for short term or long term applications.
Can be used as stand alone unit or configured into multi-unit banks.
Has a life span of 10 years.
Totally sustainable.
Multiple units can be easily linked for larger installations.

EcoLight

The EcoLight-100 combines Solar-Gem's 100 lumen LED light with an internal NiMH battery and attached 5 watt monocrystaline solar panel for a high-quality, robust long-life lighting solution for areas where there is no mains power, you can't or don't want to use a generator and a torch just isn't practicable.

The EcoLight provides sufficient energy storage to run the LED light at full brightness for up to 8 hours without sun and the 5 watt panel ensures charging in overcast conditions and a quick recharge when the sun comes out.

The integrated pull-cord switch ensures the EcoLight is splash-proof, rain-proof and dust-proof for long economical operation. The Stainless Steel fittings ensure EcoLight continues to perform in all weather environments.

EcoLight is easy to install using screws and cable ties.

And if you need more light, just add another EcoLight.

The EcoLight is now being packed in DAA Packs destined for appropriate areas.
