Christmas Shoe Box Project to East Timor

Yea High School students are thinking of others in less fortunate circumstances than themselves. A senior teacher, Ruth Konig, Rotary Club of Yea District 9790 suggested that the students fill a shoe box with small Christmas gifts worth "no more than $20". The Christmas boxes are designed to help children who would have to go without on Christmas morning in third world countries.

The students gathered together an inspirational range of little gifts to fill the boxes. Some of the items included small soft toys, coloured pencils, books, puzzles, perfumed soap, toothpaste, tooth brushes, hair combs, caps, and lollipops. The target children for these Christmas boxes are in the age range of two to 14 years, boys and girls.

The Rotary Club of Yea invited David Meller (Southern Region co-ordinator DIK) to talk to the Club about Donations in Kind and receive over 20 Christmas boxes to forward onto needy children in a third world country.

Contact was made with DIK District 9800, at the Footscray DIK Depot. They have valuable contacts in East Timor and suggested that the Christmas boxes would make excellent gifts for a small orphanage east of Dili. Peter Newton of the Ryder-Cheshire Foundation carefully stowed the boxes in the next container bound for Timor Leste, in time for Christmas.

Many of the children received their very first Christmas ever!

Congratulations to the students of Yea Secondary College and the Rotary Club of Yea for organising this great project. Also thanks must go to Peter Newton for getting the gifts to the children's home run by the Ryder-Cheshire Foundation in Tibar.

Many other Clubs may like to take up this simple project to help children in third world countries.
