Mongolia Project - Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory

Philips Integris H3000 Cardiac Catheterisation Lab

St Vincent's and Mercy Private Hospitals in Melbourne, have donated their existing Philips Integris H3000 Cardiac Catheterisation facility (Cath Lab) to Rotary for reinstallation in the National Cancer Hospital in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

The relocation and freight expenses are fully covered by DIK Eastern Region (Sydney) We are most grateful to Ron Marcus PP PHF, Rotary Club of Castle Hill, and Peter Koens, medical engineer (a non-Rotarian), from Philips Australia for organising this. This machine will be only the second serving the country of 3,000,000 people. The first machine was installed by Rotary two years ago.

Computerized Tomography Project (CT Scanner)

The National Cancer Hospital in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia does not have a working CT machine. The Hitachi CT installed in 1981 has been out of action for many years. We have a Picker PQ 2000 CT scanner available in Melbourne. We also have spare parts available to keep the PQ operational, once installed in Ulaanbaatar. This machine will become the only working machine in the country.

The cost to relocate and pay for an engineer to re-install the machines will be $7000.

The container was shipped out at the end of March 2007. Any individual Rotarian who wishes to donate funds to this project or any other project will be eligible to receive a TAX DEDUCTIBLE receipt.

Some more Cath Labs will become available in the next 3 years. If you can find a new home for them in a third world country, please let me know. I would be happy to discuss this project with interested Rotarians.

POSTSCRIPT REPORT

An appeal for funds, $7000, to all clubs and districts to send a container with a Cardiac Catheterisation Lab and an engineer to supervise its installation in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. We raised the funds.

The Cath Lab was packed into a container with the assistance of the professional staff of SEND Australia Pty Ltd and some Rotary volunteers.

One week later the same people helped load a CT CAT Scan machine into a container bound for the same destination. The loading was done free of charge by SEND Australia Transport and that was yet another great gesture from a supportive company. Another wonderful supporter is Willoughby Floor Services who not only provide the vinyl flooring material for the Cath Labs but send a team of two installers to each site to make sure the job's done right. All of this is done at no cost to the project and continually demonstrates that there are people in business out there that really care.

The machines were donated by St.Vincent's Private Hospital. They have a nominal value in excess of $600,000. Once again we are indebted to Peter Koens of Philips Australia for organising this. This is a combined Eastern and Southern Region project. Ron Marcus from Eastern Region flew down from Sydney to finalise the documentation. Ron was involved with organising 16 volunteers to help install the machines in Mongolia.

A free plug on Rotary, RAWCS and DIK occurred when Ron Marcus rang Ian "Macka" Mc.Namara on his ABC Local Radio show "Australia All Over" on Sunday 3rd June, by satellite phone, to report on the installation of the Catheter Lab and CAT Scan Machine in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The installation was progressing very well with the help of volunteers and local technicians.

Cardiac Catheterisation Lab Installation - Mongolia

report16Rotarian Peter Koens from the Rotary Club of Nunawading provided us with a YouTube link recording the installation of a Cardiac Catheterisation Lab in Shastin Hospital, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
This was a joint District project and shows just what Rotary can do when like minded clubs and Districts co-operate in a project pledged to improve the lives of others less fortunate than ourselves.

This was a truly a Rotary multi-program project. It involved Rotary Australia World Community Service, Rotary Project Volunteers and Donations in Kind.

Dear Friends,
It is very nice to have such an impressive visual report on our project, and I would like to thank Tim Coursen very much for all the work he has put in.
Tim's movie only deals with the Mongolian side of the project, but without the work carried out by all the volunteers in Australia this project would never have eventuated. The end result is a huge success. Thank you all.

At present the machine is being used every day by the local doctors, and in September 2010, a team from France arrived to treat the more complicated cases. I have requested that they continue the application training on the new machine while they are there.
