Donations In Kind (DIK) is a program whereby Rotarians and Rotary Clubs source surplus goods and products within Australia that have no further use here. These goods however, are valuable to those in needy countries. A central co-ordination committee stores, packs and dispatches the goods to needy countries. There are currently four DIK storage depots in the greater Melbourne Metropolitan area located at Essendon Airport, Footscray, Pakenham and Geelong. Separate facilities are located in Tasmania in Hobart and Launceston.

Many records were broken in the number of containers and value of goods sent overseas. The recipient countries were as diverse as the goods sent.

Recipient countries include Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Tonga, Indonesia, Thailand, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Zambia.

Partnerships with Rotary DIK

A number of partnerships were formed with other aid organisations including Victorian Student Aid Program (VSAP) who are of medical students, resident in International House, Melbourne University. On two Saturday mornings, eight 4th year medical students came over to the Essendon Store to help sort out and repack medical items.

We were approached by Nick Constance (R.C. Carlton) about donations of sewing machines from Janome dealers throughout Victoria and Tasmania. The dealers wish the traded-in machines to be sent to developing counties to help in local community micro-economy projects. This was particularly successful in Tasmania and is ongoing.

A 40 foot container was put down at the Essendon Store bound for Kijabe Hospital, Kenya. Dr Peter Bird and Luke Smeaton have formed a partnership with Rotary to source medical goods and equipment. They have also obtained the assistance of R.C. Nunawading as their principal partner.

Daniel Zuzek of Baobab Medical Technologies of Doncaster East, an Australian company specialising in the supply of state of the art medical equipment to the healthcare industry contacted us about forming a partnership.

Daniel Zuzek wrote:
"We are aware of the great work that Rotary does, and the voluntary nature of the activities.
We would like to donate good used equipment to Rotary.
We would like to ask those hospitals/clinics where we are making a new installation, to donate their (working) equipment to a developing country.
We would like to see this become a regular way that we as a country can help those less fortunate than ourselves.
We look forward to a mutually satisfying relationship between Rotary and Baobab Medical Technologies."

We have signed an agreement and have had some valuable donations. This is an ongoing project.

In May, a group of Rotarians and volunteers helped transfer and finally pack 2 cardiac catheterisation labs into container bound for of the Teaching Hospital in Kurunegala, Sri Lanka, under the supervision of Peter Koens (Philips Healthcare and member R.C. Nunawading) and Ron Marcus (Eastern Region - Sydney). The funds for shipment came from a partnership between the Australia Sri Lanka Council, the Lions Club and various Rotary Clubs, including R.C. Mornington, Frankston, Strathmore, Nunawading. Rotary Volunteers from Eastern Region travelled to Sri Lanka to reassemble the machines successfully in the Kurunegala Hospital.

There were a number of times goods were transferred between DIK depots to help fulfil "wish lists". Once again we are indebted to our volunteers.

I want to remind all Rotarians that in the financial year 2007-08 DIK Southern Region was a $7.7 million enterprise. This is an increase over last year of $2.2 million.

Goods were valued at $6.8 million
Volunteer labour valued at $715,000

Individual reports of each District are available on their District web sites.

I want to inform all Clubs of the availability of speakers on DIK. Contact your District International chair. Once again I would ask that all Clubs put aside some funds for DIK.

As Southern Region Co-ordinator, I wish to continue and consolidate liaison between Districts for expertise, ideas and goods for distribution to developing countries.

I would like to continue to raise the profile of DIK as a worthwhile project of Rotary.
