Rotarian Counsellors:

A Benefit Not Found in Other Programs

Scholars tell us again and again in their reports that the relationship with their host Rotarians--especially the host counsellor--is one of the most rewarding aspects of the scholarship.  It’s what sets Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships apart from any other scholarship program.  This unique strength of the program is only possible thanks to Rotarians like you.

“What I think great about Rotary Scholarships is that it is not just a money give-away, but it provides scholars with opportunities to adapt into a new environment by matching them with their Rotary counsellors.  I was able to have first-hand experience of Canadian life by spending a lot of time with my counsellor and his family.  In retrospect, it made me feel like I was accepted as a member of a community and a family.  I never felt that I was all alone in a strange country.”
--Scholar Remi Hirama (Japan to Québec, Canada)

“There are many other scholarships which provide the money to pursue certain studies abroad, but the Rotary scholarship is unique because it offers not just an educational opportunity but it leads to the very heart of a foreign culture--to the people....For me it is still unbelievable how warmly I was received by so many different people--only Rotary made that possible.”
--Scholar Annett Schmaecke (Germany to California, USA)

What Makes a Great Host Counsellor?

“Since the day I arrived, my counsellor...was [tireless].  Always dedicated, he called me several times a week, inviting me to participate in many different activities.  He introduced me to his relatives, other Rotarians and friends.  He was always concerned in making me feel comfortable wherever I was.  Gary is my best friend in America and I’ll never forget him.”
--Scholar Marcelo Zardo (Brazil to Texas, USA)

“My host Rotary counsellors…are absolutely superb.  The term counsellors is much too cold for our relationship so I always call them my New Zealand parents.  From the moment they met me at the airport, Mike and Wendy have absorbed me into their family and are always there for me.”
--Scholar Mary Talbot (Missouri, USA to New Zealand)
