The 2012 D9790 "HOT-TO-TROT"
Ride to Conference for Polio Plus
January 2012

Rotarians like to have fun!!
Cycling Rotarians are no exception!!

This year’s Ride to Conference isn’t all hard riding, but has opportunities to relax, mess about and sample local produce.
The Ride commences on Saturday 17th March at the site of last year’s Conference at Wangaratta. Riders will progress at a leisurely pace, taking in the delights of NE Victoria and the Goulburn River Valley, including being pleasantly surprised by a full Eildon Weir. Having checked out iconic segments of the new High Country Rail Trail, the peleton will push through the boulder-strewn landscape south of Seymour to Macedon. Our final day will see us descend upon Melbourne along some cycle trails which will connect up with Mooney Valley

Overnight sleepovers where cyclists can carbo-load, check out local offerings and generally chill out are at Wangaratta, Mansfield, Eildon, Seymour and Macedon.

Some wickedly decadent refuelling stops are at the Gapsted winery, the Milawa Cheese Factory, the ubiquitous local rub-a-dub-dub each evening, the Woodlands Historic Home for scones, jam and cream and various coffee shops and bakeries along the way.

Cyclists should be reasonably fit and experienced but not too serious. 580 km distance is to be covered in the six days. Cyclists can commit to any from 1 to 6 days - we are flexible. Costs are $400 for the week plus $50 for a Rotary cycling top. Cyclists are expected to raise a minimum of $250 for Polio Plus.

If this catches your eye and you are interested, please check out the attached links to the Entry Form, Ride Description and Sponsor Sheet.

Registrations close by early February and we are limited to a peleton of 30 cyclists.

  • This is a supported ride with back-up vehicle(s) transporting our gear and providing on-road support.
  • Accommodation is over 5 nights and will be in hotel / motel bed & breakfast facilities.
  • The purpose of the Ride is to raise money for Polio Plus. In so doing we will raise public awareness of Rotary International and have some good fun and fellowship in the process.

  • As an option you may wish to ride a part of the way only for a pro rata cost plus the cost of a cycle top.

Polio Plus (ref. District Directory 2011-12 p29)

  • Rotarians are making the end of Polio more than a dream - they are ensuring that two billion children have been immunized and five million have been spared death or disability
  • In the push to finish Polio, Rotarians are pressing ahead with Rotary’s US $200 Million Challenge to match the $355 million grant received from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
  • The nearly 33000 Rotary Clubs in the world are each being challenged to contribute at least $1000 annually for three years up to 30th June 2012
  • Sponsoring a Rotarian cyclist from your Club in the Ride to Conference might well be one way in which your Club can meet this challenge.
  • PDG David Cooke of the Rotary Club of Albury West is the District 9790 Polio Plus Co-ordinator
