FIVE GREAT REASONS TO REGISTER NOW

1. GREAT ROTARY FELLOWSHIP

I put this first as I really believe it is the main business of District Conference. It is an opportunity to see the work of other clubs and individuals in the broader context of District 9790 and Rotary International. The programme allows for networking at all of these levels. You will come away refreshed, with new ideas and friends and a new grasp of the fantastic work being done by this worldwide organization.

2. GREAT SPEAKERS

Our Programme Directors have gathered a varied and impressive lineup of keynote speakers and activities.
Li Cunxin - Mao’s Last Dancer - is just one of the speakers of international standing. He tells of his humble beginnings and the tenacity that brought him to international fame as a dancer.
Wendy Green, the speaker at our Sportsman’s Dinner, may be less well known locally, but hers is also a ‘fairytale’ story - from outback teacher to owner of a Melbourne Cup winner. Her down to earth stories of life in Australian horseracing have won her speaking engagements around the world.
The panel discussion on ‘The Future’ should be broad enough for all interests and includes renowned local commentators such as Rob Gell and Bob Birell.
Gemma Sisia is a young worker on the international scene in Tanzania where she founded the School of Saint Jude. It is always inspiring to see the incredible achievements of such inspirational young people.
Sam Cawthorne -2009 Young Australian of the Year - is another youthful speaker. His ‘Return from Death’ after a major accident is just part of his inspirational story. He now speaks to a wide audience, motivated to create a more positive world.
As you can see, there is much here for both enjoyment and inspiration.

3. GREAT WORKSHOPS

District Chairs are already hard at work designing these Breakout sessions. Even Rotarians of long standing may find something new here. The sessions will run as workshops allowing for detailed questioning and a sharing of experience.

4. A GREAT ROTARY EXPO

This has grown out of the House of friendship and will be open to the public. On the opening Friday night we sponsor the first race, bringing Rotary to the attention of an audience of thousands. It is our hope that the publicity will bring people into the Expo creating a fantastic opportunity for participants to show their exhibits. It is still not too late to book a booth, but planning is well advanced for those who have already registered their interest.

5. GREAT ENTERTAINMENT

The two major dinners are both well on the way. The Sportsman’s Dinner, in addition to the guest speaker, will feature the talented artist Joe Zapp. Joe was a popular feature at Strathmore’s Sportsman’s dinner, where he completed two astonishing paintings of sporting personalities which were then auctioned. Perhaps you would like to nominate a candidate for a portrait. They have ranged from Ricky Ponting to Black Caviar. The Saturday night dinner is also booked and we are looking forward to the Police Concert Band. On the Friday night all registrants have free admission to the races. Dinner has not been booked, as many other city shows and venues will be available. If you do want to book at Moonee valley, ring 1300 797 959 and mention that you are a part of the Rotary conference.

6. GREAT SPONSORS

Yes I know I said Five! But the contribution of our generous sponsors is crucial to the work of District Conference. So when deciding on booking for Bangkok next May, naturally I went to Harvey World Travel who sponsored Conference 2011. And when organizing the Conference Polo shirt, we went to Fair Trade. Our bank is the Bendigo Bank and our stock market advisors are Dolphin. Vision Eye Institute will work with us on a major project. The Commonwealth government supports our volunteers. And when we are buying wines we turn to Buller Wines watch the web for their new fortified package. Next orders go in last week in January. Sincere thanks should also go to Neil Beer Holden and Mitsubishi in Seymour for his valued sponsorship.

I hope that you are inspired by this brief taste of the good things to come and that you will ‘REGISTER EARLY IF NOT OFTEN’

I wish you Peace, Health and Happiness in 2012 and a fabulous New Year full of great achievements and experiences.

Yours in Rotary,
Ruth
