To complement Rotary International's quest to eradicate illiteracy worldwide the Rotary Club of Albury Hume six years ago became aware of kids not reading and writing due to their addiction to computer games, internet, text messages etc. Albury-Hume Rotary Club members visited all Secondary schools and after meeting with school principals and English masters it was decided to aim the project at year 7 to 10 year Secondary school students and for them to participate in the writing competition and attend workshops at all schools conducted by professional children authors. In 2002 we commenced with 6 schools and received 78 entries. This year 13 schools participated and 450 entries were received. Over 1000 students attended the workshops conducted by a visiting author. The Rotary competition is now recognized as an annual calendar event in Albury/Wodonga supported by both City Councils. The winners of each school receive a $50 voucher on Dymocks and the outright winners of each section receive $150. The winnings schools each receive a cheque for $400 towards their library. The prizes were presented on Saturday 18th October at a family fun day in Central Albury. The prizes were presented to a packed audience in the Albury Museum Library. The objective of the project: 1 - To provide a positive opportunity for young school students to enhance their literacy learning and skills and the underlining of the importance of literacy in our community. 2 - The encouragement of inspiring of literary creativity underpinning the celebration of our regional literary talent. Benefit to the community The encouragement of school children and students to express in writing, their pride in our regional and multicultural heritage thus strengthening the development of literacy through creative writing.
